The Station

By the 1970's WCBS fm radio 101.1 on the dial was gaining popularity for playing top hits and oldies. It became a model for radio stations across the country who were trying to gain market share on the radio. The management team at WCBS fm hired DJ's who were members of singing groups, or experts about the doowop scene. That formula worked for many years but in 2002 the station management decided to change the format and not play oldies or doowop any longer. WCBS has never regained their former glory to this day.

Don K. Reed

Don is a radio DJ who started a program in 1975 on WCBSFM out of New York city. It was called "The doowop shop". It was on the air every Sunday evening for 27 years. He played oldies, mostly group harmony, and gave his listeners background information about the singing groups. He would also feature a particular group each week, by playing several of their recordings. He also took phone calls and sent out dedications on the air.
The vocal harmony groups that visited Don in the studio usually brought with them a Doowop jingle that they created especially for Don and his Doowop Shop radio show. Over the years Don garnered quite a collection of these jingles. He played several of these jingles every week on his show. As these jingles gained momentum, there appeared to be a sort of competition between the singing groups to bring Don ever better and more elaborate jingles. An enjoyable part of the show was listening to the Jingles. You will hear these jingles at the Fan club.
